Welcome to Basic Mentor Training for Certification. Mentoring is an ancient art dating back to the times of Aristotle; although, we can certainly imagine cave people showing each other how to hunt and survive in the wild which was most certainly a form of mentoring. Even animals mentor each other. Adult elephants work with younger ones to learn the ways of the group. Mentoring is not about creating a clone of yourself. Mentoring is about having the courage to follow your protege where he wants to go. Mentoring is about letting your protege know that if she never feels like giving up, then perhaps her dreams are not big enough or challenging enough. Mentoring is about being humble enough to admit that you do not know every answer, but that you are willing to search for answers with your protege. And, mentoring is about sacrificing the small part of you that will allow your protege to find that unique part of himself.

Topics include:

  • What is Mentoring?
  • Leadership Style and Mentoring
  • Confidentiality and Privacy
  • Self-Awareness and Reflection
  • Growth Feedback
  • Using Praise Effectively
  • Cross-cultural Mentoring and Generational Communication
  • Ending a Mentoring Relationship

“If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.”
