The NTA Joins Seventy-Five Education Organizations Signing Letter Calling for Greater Teacher Diversity
Sent to Secretary Betsy DeVos and Leaders in Congress
Lakeland, FL – National Tutoring Association, the oldest and largest professional association dedicated exclusively to tutoring, has signed onto a letter, organized by the Association of American Educators Foundation, sent to Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos and leaders in Congress calling for their help in addressing the lack of teacher diversity in our nation’s classrooms. The letter, citing federal data and university studies, reports that 53 percent of public school students are children of color, while only 18 percent of teachers identify as a person of color. Studies reveal this disparity causes overall lower student achievement and outcomes, especially in populations of at-risk students and students of color.
The letter states, “We believe that increasing teacher diversity elevates the teaching profession and improves the lives and outcomes of all students,” and calls on all parties involved to play a role in addressing the problem. The letter volunteers the services of the undersigned organizations to help Congress and the Department of Education to determine how proposed regulations and legislation may increase or decrease teacher diversity.
More than seventy-five education organizations representing teachers, preservice teachers, school counselors, education staff, principals, superintendents, charter school leaders, education reformers, tutors, and teacher educators have signed the letter. The list of signatories includes United Negro College Fund, National Network of State Teachers of the Year, National Alliance for Public Charter Schools, Diverse Charter Schools Coalition, Educators Rising, Branch Alliance for Educator Diversity, The Fellowship for Black Male Educators, National Association for Multicultural Education, National Council for the Social Studies, National Association of Special Education Teachers, Organization of American Historians, International Literacy Association, American Association for Employment in Education, Association of Teacher Educators, American Association of Physics Teachers, Kappa Delta Pi, Thomas B. Fordham Institute, and Educators for Excellence.

Colin Sharkey, Executive Director of AAE Foundation and organizer of the project, stated, “We believe the collective effort of these signatories and other organizations committed to this issue will lead to solutions improving pathways for the next generation of educators and addressing issues of morale, training, and support disproportionately impacting teachers of color but too commonplace for all teachers.”

Tutor Training in Maracaibo, Venezuela
The NTA's rockstar trainer Elena Garcia trained four tutors in Venezuela. As you know, Venezuela is going through a difficult period right now, and people like Elena are valuable assets to their communities. Below is a part of her email to us describing some of the struggles they have to endure.
Most of the tutors that got certified are leaving the country as soon as they graduate from college. They are leaving to Argentina, Spain, and the USA. It was a wonderful group with a very positive attitude. We had a blackout in the city an hour after we had started the course. We had to move to another place, thank God we went to one of the tutor's home where they have a a power plant. I was able to give the training peacefully and was able to cover all the topics.

The NTA extends our thoughts and prayers to our members and colleagues in harms way. Three of our long time Board of Directors live in affected areas, so we understand very well what it means to have family in danger and in need during these times. As a show of our support for our members in the affected areas, we are suspending all membership fees for these members for one year, and we will be offering a 50% discount to any members living in the affected areas who wish to take webinar trainings once they return to work. In the interim, know that we are thinking about you and your families, and we are hoping the best for you all as you come safely through the other side of these storms.

NTA Board Member Publishes Book
Miriam V. Osborne Elliott has been an invaluable NTA board member for several years. The NTA Board of Directors is proud of her new exciting accomplishment of publishing her novel, The Price of Promotion. Congratulations Miriam! You can purchase her book from this link.
Many people go through their entire life without taking the time to stop and ask themselves the vital life questions that can enable them to find their best future. In The Price of Promotion, author Miriam Osborne Elliott encourages us to take a moment to ask ourselves these questions: Who am I? What am I willing to change to find the life I want to live? As we begin to reflect upon the answers to these questions, a clearer picture of where and who we are today begins to emerge. For those on a positive path, The Price of Promotion can help them avoid a few purpose-deterring pitfalls; for anyone headed down the path of defeat and deferred destiny, stop! We need to take a personal and professional inventory of our lives and learn to listen to our God-given inner voices. Everyone wants to achieve a sense of progress and significance. The Price of Promotion can provide guidance through the process of assessing and setting life goals and identifying the paths needed to achieve them. If we can embrace the truth of ourselves, we can draw closer to our God-given purpose-finding, knowing, and doing what we were ultimately created to do.

Tutor Training in Tegucigalpa, Honduras
In early August, our talented Tutor Trainer Elena Garcia certified three more tutors in Tegucigalpo, Honduras!
Advanced Training Helps CSM Students Be Better Tutors
Free Peer Tutoring is Available at All CSM Campuses
Seven College of Southern Maryland (CSM) peer tutors completed basic, intermediate and advanced tutoring training over the summer in order to further assist CSM students requiring help in their fields of study. The seven peer – or student – tutors join three other advanced tutors at CSM who have achieved National Tutoring Association Certifications.
The advanced tutors are available to provide face-to-face, free help to all currently enrolled students. The CSM Learning Centers provides tutoring at all of the CSM campuses, including the Waldorf Center. There are close to 40 peer and professional tutors on staff who are available for group tutoring throughout the day and evenings at designated tutoring rooms.
“We don’t want any student to ever feel overwhelmed by any class demands that are being placed on them,” explained Lead Learning Support Services Program’s Coordinator Laurie Cangelosi. “Our tutors don’t teach – that is what the instructors do. Instead, they are here to help students understand concepts and review skills. It is pretty neat,” she added, “to walk by a tutoring room and see the tutors working through examples of math problems on the white board, or sitting around the table with students talking through theories. They are very engaged.”
Cangelosi said that students are encouraged to come to the tutoring room early in the semester. “It is easier on everyone if students start off on a good pace, instead of trying to catch up when the course gets more challenging later on during the semester. In fact, all students are encouraged to do their homework in the tutoring room. That way, if they have a question there is someone right there to help them.”
Tutoring is offered in a variety of subjects including English, math and biology. The tutoring on campus is walk-in, no appointment necessary. The Learning Centers are located at the La Plata Campus in the Library, Room 118; at the Leonardtown Campus in Building B, Room 111; and at the Prince Frederick Campus in Building A, Room 125 and various locations at the Regional Hughesville Campus and the Waldorf Center.
In addition to face-to-face tutoring, online tutoring services are available around the clock to currently enrolled credit CSM students in the areas of math, writing, English as second language, accounting, economics and chemistry. Learn more about tutoring, the tutor’s schedules and tutoring locations at https://www.csmd.edu/student-services/learning-support/tutoring/.

Fall Fuel for Finals at Johnston Community College
Semester’s end is a stressful time for any college student. Johnston Community College's TRIO program helps alleviate the stress of studying for finals by providing opportunities for reflection, relaxation, meditation, and fun through our "Fuel for Finals" event. We call this event “Fuel for Finals” and this year, we really upped the ante on what we provided for TRIO Students. We wanted our students to leave each day excited about what was to come the following day, rather than dreading finals week altogether.
In TRIO, our participation increases when we provide the two “Fs”—Freebies and Food. For this semester, since it is the holiday season, we decided to have a themed Fuel for Finals and hosted our first “Fuel For Finals: All Aboard the Polar Express!” We introduced the theme by having a door decorating contest in our area among staff, though the students were so excited about us decorating, that they wanted to join in, as well! We decided to open up areas for the students to decorate and they became part of the competition. In fact, our winning door went to one such student!

We decided to open up areas for the students to decorate and they became part of the competition. In fact, our winning door went to one such student!
In addition to our Fuel for Finals, we wanted to increase the traffic throughout TRIO all week long—as an incentive to come in (to pick up their Fuel for Finals bags and to encourage participation in the week long festivities) our TRIO escapee, Ginge R. Breadman, was let loose in TRIO. This little rascal hid each day from TRIO staff and the student who “captured” him not only earned a TRIO prize, but also got their picture taken with the notorious cookie.
So what was the point of all this? Why provide a weeklong event for TRIO students during Finals? Well, the strategy is three-fold; first, we want the students to know, if they didn’t already, that TRIO is here for them from the beginning of the semester, to the end—we want them to feel comfortable coming to us for help during this stressful time and we want to be able to provide creative and useful strategies for them to work through this tough time of year. Secondly, our program only survives if the students come back—this means we need to increase foot traffic in our area. What better way to do that then with fun and freebies? We can help students overcome their aversion to seeking assistance if they are having fun while doing it. After all, learning is supposed to be fun, right? Shouldn’t we help reiterate this? Finally, all of the games, crafts, meditation, relaxation exercises, etc. are things that we incorporate into TRIO, in general, and tutoring, specifically, in order to help students bridge the gap between the classroom and the real world. Our tutors use games to reinforce concepts, creativity to generate thoughts, and meditation to increase mindfulness. Essentially, Fuel for Finals advertises TRIO for us in an innovative way so that the students become our biggest advocates.
Did TRIO’s “Fuel for Finals: All Aboard the Polar Express” work? Of course it did. We know it worked and that the students had a successful semester because, for the fourth semester in a row, TRIO students helped earn our tutorial program a 100% success rate. The lowest grade reported was a “C.” 60% of the students receiving tutorial support earned an “A” in the course for which they were being tutored, 30% earned a B, and only 10% earned a C! JCC TRIO students are AMAZING!!! I am excited to see what next semester has in store for this phenomenal program!

Seeing the value that tutoring brings, Peter decided to start a tutoring company named UpperClassman, and he has committed to training and certifying every tutor he works with to a minimum of the NTA Basic Level Tutor. Peter is carefully tracking along to become a NTA Certified Tutor Trainer. UpperClassman was among 36 businesses (out of 600 applications) to be honored in April during the 2017 New Jersey Business Idea Competition Awards Ceremony. Peter was awarded a finalist and was invited to speak about UpperClassman to the audience.
Testimonials on UpperClassman:
~Our experience with UpperClassman has changed the way my son looks at tutoring. Having someone who is similar in age creates an atmosphere that has been very conducive to learning. My son looks up to his tutor Peter and Has gained confidence from working with an upperclassman rooting him on. I would recommend you give UpperClassman a try.

~Gerry has struggled this year adjusting to middle school. And he said “ mom I think I finally get it. It took me this long!” He really enjoyed you coming (and said he was glad it wasn’t with an old person!). He was apprehensive because mom telling him what to do stinks. He wasn’t sure what to expect. You really elevated his confidence in himself. And he took your tips very seriously. In a good way. He got a lot out of your session and told me he was happy that you came. His confidence has been an issue this year. Challenging with all of middle school stuff.
You were great with him. So thank you for that!

Training in Venezuela
On February 11th, NTA Certified Tutor Trainer Elena Garcia trained five students as Basic Tutors in Caracas, Venezuela!
Go Red for Women!
On National Wear Red Day®, be sure to wear something red to show your support for women with heart disease and stroke.
The National Tutoring Association is "painting our website red" in honor of Wear Red for Women day on February 3rd.
According to the American Heart Association: Heart disease and stroke cause 1 in 3 deaths among women each year, killing approximately one woman every 80 seconds. Fortunately, we can change that because 80 percent of cardiac and stroke events may be prevented with education and action. That’s why this year we are asking that you wear red on National Wear Red Day® Friday, February 3, 2017, encourage others to do the same and make the time to Know Your Numbers. Five numbers, that all women should know to take control of their heart health are: Total Cholesterol, HDL (good) Cholesterol, Blood Pressure, Blood Sugar and Body Mass Index (BMI). Knowing these numbers can help women and their healthcare provider determine their risk for developing cardiovascular diseases.
The National Tutoring Association invites other programs around the country to raise awareness of heart disease and stroke. Join us on Friday, February 3rd, 2017 as we Wear Red for Women! If you do, please use the hashtag #GoRedWearRed and #NTAtutor!

This is Why We Tutor.
We received an email from one of our certified tutor trainers who runs a student success center at an Aspen Prize nominated community college (top 150 community colleges). She reported to the NTA some interesting and encouraging data and metrics for this semester. She said this of their tutoring program:
Of the students that requested tutoring this semester with their program, even if they only came to one single session, every student passed the courses for which they requested tutoring. Of the students that requested tutoring this semester, and attended tutoring sessions through half of the semester, then, feeling confident enough in their abilities, requested to cease tutorial support, the lowest grade reported was a C. Of the students that requested tutoring from day one in the semester and persisted throughout the semester (through the last day of tutoring) the lowest grade reported was a B.
This is proof that tutoring provides the necessary support to achieve academic success. Each of these students grew so much this semester not only in the courses for which they were receiving tutoring, but also in their studying, time management, and other essential academic skills.
This is why we do what we do. Please send us your own tutor success stories!

A Quick News Update.
The NTA is proud to announce a new, business-oriented webinar, Private Practitioner Certification Workshop, facilitated by NTA board member, Stephanie Dunaieff, for those of you interested in opening your own tutoring business. View all of our new webinars here!
In addition, we will soon produce webinar “shorts” on selected topics. These webinars will be shorter in length and less expensive than the main training webinars and will rotate topics quarterly so that certified tutors and coaches will have an inexpensive and interesting way to earn continuing education units for certification renewal. The first short webinar will be Active Listening: "Holla" if You Can Hear Me... And I will Turn Up the "Volume." This webinar will be priced at $29.95 and facilitated by our own board member, Dr. Cheryle Snead-Green.
Trainer certification has been overhauled so that a trainer may now be certified as a tutor trainer, an academic coach trainer, or both. The NTA Private Practitioner Tutor Certification Program is now in place and the webinar training for that certification will start this month. The workbook is already completed. In addition, our Mentor Certification requirements are complete, as is the new mentor training workbook.
The NTA is proud to announce that we have published a “Code of Ethics” for academic coaches as well as a list of “Reasons to Hire NTA Certified Tutors.”
Finally, the NTA is extremely happy to announce that we have sent 62 boxes to our deployed airmen in just over 16 months. Our initial goal was 12 boxes in 12 months. We offer special thanks to our Vice-President, Brandy Daingerfield, who serves as our liaison to the military. Not only does her family serve our country for which we are so grateful, but she recruits the names of airmen who need a care package. We need your continued help. Please see below for a list of items that we send to the airmen. Please consider holding a drive in your tutorial center so that we can continue to send boxes to our deployed men and women.

Meet Lauren - a NTA Certified Tutor
As an organization, the National Tutoring Association is filled with success stories like Lauren's. We're proud to know that we were a part of this young woman's journey to becoming the the catalyst for success in both her education and those students she tutors. Congratulations, Lauren, on your success and future success!
Tutoring, and more broadly volunteering, has become a central part of my identity and is something I intend to do in college and thereafter. I see it as a window to the world, giving people opportunities previously unknown to them. I started tutoring as a sophomore in high school and will be graduating high school with over 300 tutoring hours. Volunteering has allowed me to connect with a vast and diverse group of people and expand my passion for education and helping students succeed. In recent times, I have worked with the Math National Honors Society to create an Algebra I EOC Review Night which allows students taking Algebra I courses to come and receive tutoring both one-on-one and in groups. After just the first run of this review night my school’s EOC scores went up significantly! This has helped create other review nights at our school including one for the Biology EOC test and the U.S. History EOC test. Due to the work I do with my students and the tutoring program at my school, I was recently named a 2015 Apple Award recipient, a tremendous honor and privilege which has shown me that my dedication does not go unnoticed. As I go off to Vanderbilt University next year I hope to join programs which allow the university’s students to tutor elementary school students along with other tutoring programs and educational opportunities. But moreover, tutoring has not just earned me recognition but rather fueled a passion within me and inspired me to always keep education and volunteerism as a fundamental part of my life.

The NTA Trains and Certifies Hundreds of Mentors and Peer Tutors
in National Program
National Tutoring Association Works with AT&T Aspire Program and LEAD to Keep Teens in School
January 2013 - Lakeland, FL – The National Tutoring Association (NTA), The LEAD Program and AT&T have teamed up to mentor and tutor over 1,000 students at risk of dropping out of high school. This six-city program will develop student academic and life
skills as a project within the AT&T Aspire Mentoring Academy.
The Mentoring Academy is the key community engagement program of AT&T's $350 million investment in Aspire, focused on high school success and leading to college and career readiness. AT&T’s employees are helping their communities with a goal of providing 1 million hours of mentoring to students at risk of dropping out of high school. The NTA was chosen by LEAD, the organizer of this particular program, as the primary tutor training resource. With over 20 years of experience, NTA is the only US educational association accredited to train and certify tutors, tutor trainers, tutoring programs and centers, and academic coaches.
The mentoring and academic readiness program incorporates NTA training and certification of high-school peer tutors at approximately 36 schools to be designated in the coming weeks. AT&T employees may also elect to receive academic coach training and national NTA certification in support of their mentoring activities. In addition, “city champions” will have the opportunity to join the NTA Train-the-Trainer program, in order to conduct future tutor trainings in 2013 and thereafter. The tutor and academic coach training workbooks and on-line trainer development campus were developed by Crossroads of Learning (Los Angeles) in conjunction with the NTA and Fielding Graduate University (Santa Barbara). This curriculum is currently in use at hundreds of schools and tutoring centers throughout the U.S. and internationally from Bejing, China through Canada and Saudi Arabia. It is approved for continuing education units by Fielding Graduate University.
The AT&T sponsored program kicked off in Chicago at Northwestern University on October 20, 2012 where high school students met with AT&T employees who will mentor them during the 2012-2013 school year. The five other cities (Raleigh/Durham NC, Bedminster NJ, Atlanta GA, Dallas TX, and Washington D.C.) will also begin operations in the coming weeks.
The Chicago launch featured team-building exercises and one-on-one meetings between mentors and students. Karen Royster-James, Director of the Learning Studio - Science and Math Learning Center at Columbia College Chicago and NTA Secretary and Board of Director Member addressed the group to prepare them for the tutoring and coaching challenges that lie ahead.
The following weekend saw the first group of peer tutors trained by NTA Certified Master Tutor Trainer Avery Austin who found that “these are highly motivated students are willing form a vanguard for educational change within their schools. It was a pleasure to engage them in the crucial development of the skills and understanding of effective peer tutoring.”
Throughout the program year, the student participants will meet regularly with their AT&T mentors and receive regular tutoring at their schools. The goal will be accomplished through utilization of Inspired by LEAD’s TRIAD program, one-on-one mentoring with AT&T employees and individual and small group peer-tutoring to develop skills and plan careers.

Both Organizations to Promote Professional Tutor Development and Tutor Universe
Iowa City, Iowa – (Sept. 10, 2013) – Tutor Universe, Inc., the social marketplace for learning, and the National Tutoring Association (NTA), the oldest and largest professional association dedicated exclusively to tutoring, announced today an exclusive partnership to jointly promote professional development and Tutor Universe’s online learning platform and global learning marketplace. The NTA will offer discounted membership and professional certification for the more than 8,000 tutors registered with Tutor Universe. Online technologies and the mainstreaming of social networking are forever changing the traditional tutoring market. Today’s tech obsessed students prefer online to in-person tutoring. While traditional face-to-face teaching still dominates the tutoring industry, online and social learning is rapidly growing in education according to the GSV.EDU Education Sector Factbook by GSV Advisors. “We want to have a community where it is easy to collaborate, teach and learn. Students should be able to get help anytime and anywhere very quickly,” said Dr. Hung Tran, Co-Founder and CTO of Tutor Universe. “We enable students and tutors to engage asynchronously or in live interactive teaching sessions in a fast, convenient and affordable way.”
“We are looking forward to working with Tutor Universe to help train and certify their tutors while at the same time provide an industry leading online tutoring platform to our 10,000 plus members,” said Dr. Sandi Ayaz, Executive Director, the National Tutoring Association. “We reviewed many solutions in the marketplace over the years and we finally have a solution and partner that meets the needs of our tutor members and aligns with our mission and Code of Ethics.”
“The online tutoring market is exploding and with our exclusive partnership with the National Tutoring Association we can offer our tutors the means to achieve certification with the only organization in the world offering an accredited certification for tutoring,” said Michael Morrison, Co-founder and CEO, Tutor Universe. “Having the NTA validate our marketplace and online learning platform is also a great milestone for us and provides our students with the reassurance that they’re engaging tutors who are specially trained to handle their learning needs and help improve outcomes. Dr. Ayaz and I both are committed to advancing tutoring to enhance student academics and we look forward to working with the NTA.”

With college application rates up and SAT scores dropping, students and parents often find themselves looking for affordable ways to help improve their educational outcomes. Today, the National Tutoring Association named Testive its official Test Preparation Technology provider and will offer discounts on Testive’s SAT preparation software to all of the NTA’s Members.
Tetsive and the NTA say that this partnership helps tutors improve their current offerings and cost-effectively provide services to students who haven’t traditionally been able to afford private tutoring.
“Testive has allowed me to offer a whole range of individualized services to students who haven’t traditionally been able to afford private tutoring,” said Eric Clark, owner of Quincy Tutoring.
Testive is the only online SAT preparation platform designed to be used in conjunction with a private tutor or small class setting. Testive combines detailed monitoring tools to help tutors keep students on track and adaptive learning algorithms that customize each student’s education experience on the fly. The system automatically adjusts to a student’s ability level and targets content based on the level difficulty that will help the student improve the fastest.
The National Tutoring Association is the country’s oldest and largest association dedicated solely to the advancement of tutors. It offers the only accredited university approved tutor training and certification program in addition to professional development and discounted services via partners to its members.
“We only partner with companies of the highest educational quality and professional integrity. Testive’s product is unique in that it seeks to enhance the power of the tutor rather than replace it with a machine. We’re excited to bring this and other services to our members that can both help them grow their businesses and improve their educational outcomes,” said Dr. Lucy Lapekas, Executive Director of the NTA.
“While many people initially hire tutors for their credentials, educators know that their ability to engage and motivate the student is what really drives success. We’ve built Testive to help great educators reach more students more effectively and create a better educational experience for everyone involved,” said Miro Kazakoff, CEO of Testive and a former test prep tutor himself.
