Requirements and Prerequisites for Tutors
​(Excluding Academic Coaches and Mentors)

​BASIC LEVEL TUTOR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
  • Current NTA Membership in good standing
  • AA or AS Degree Required or Started at an Accredited Institution (Peer Tutors in high school do not require a high school diploma, but must be at least 16 years old)
  • 30 hours of documented tutoring
  • Competency proven through the following: 
    • Successful completion of Basic Level Tutor Webinar.
    • Successful completion of Learning Preferences Webinar.
  • ​Completion of training can be via in-school training, NTA regional or national workshop/conference, or by our webinars. 
  • Payment of the appropriate NTA Certification fee.

INTERMEDIATE LEVEL TUTOR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
  • Prerequisite:  Basic Level Tutor Certification
  • Current NTA Membership in good standing
  • AA or AS Degreed Required or Started at Accredited Institution 
  • Thirty (30) hours of college credit required
  • 50 hours of documented tutoring
  • Competency proven through the following:
    • Successful completion of Basic Level Tutor Webinar.
    • Successful completion of Learning Preferences Webinar.
    • Successful completion of Intermediate Level Tutor Webinar.
    • Completion of training can be via in-school training, NTA regional or national workshop/conference, or by our webinars. 
  • Payment of the appropriate NTA Certification fee.

ADVANCED LEVEL TUTOR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
  • Prerequisite:  Intermediate Level Tutor Certification
  • Current NTA Membership in good standing
  • Associate's Degree required plus 30 hours toward BA or BS Degree completed  
  • Associate's Degree required
  • 100 hours of documented tutoring
  • Competency proven through the following:
    • Successful completion of Basic Level Tutor Webinar.
    • Successful completion of Learning Preferences Webinar.
    • Successful completion of Intermediate Level Tutor Webinar.
    • Successful completion of Advanced Level Tutor Webinar.
  • ​​​Completion of training can be via in-school training, NTA regional or national workshop/conference, or by our webinars. 
  • Payment of the appropriate NTA Certification fee.

READING TUTOR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
  • Current NTA Membership in good standing
  • Associate’s Degree Required
  • 50 documented hours of reading tutoring (may be volunteer hours)
  • Competency proven through the following: 
    • Successful completion of Basic Level Tutor Webinar.
    • Successful completion of Learning Preferences Webinar.
    • Successful completion of Becoming a Reading Tutor Webinar.
    • Successful completion of Matching Books Webinar.
    • Successful completion of Guided Reading Webinar.
    • Successful completion of Quality Questioning Webinar​.
  • Completion of training can be via in-school training, NTA regional or national workshop/conference, or by our webinars. 
  • Payment of the appropriate NTA Certification fee.

MATH TUTOR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
  • Current NTA Membership in good standing
  • AA or AS Degree Required or Started at an Accredited Institution (Peer Tutors in high school do not require a high school diploma, but must be at least 16 years old)
  • 50 hours of documented Math tutoring
  • Competency proven through the following: 
    • Successful completion of Connect the Disconnect: Understanding Math Strategies Part One. 
    • Successful completion of Connect the Disconnect: Understanding Math Strategies Part Two. 
    • Successful completion of Learning Preferences Webinar.
    • Successful completion of Basic Level Tutor Webinar.
  • Completion of training can be via in-school training, NTA regional or national workshop/conference, or by our webinars. 
  • Payment of the appropriate NTA Certification fee

MASTER LEVEL TUTOR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
  • Prerequisites: 
    • Successful completion of NTA Advanced Level Tutor Program.
    • Successful completion of NTA Advanced Level Academic Coaching Program.
    • Successful completion of NTA Advanced Level Mentor Program.
  • Current NTA Membership in good standing
  • Bachelor's Degree required Master's Degree Preferred  
  • 500 hours of documented tutoring​
  • ​Minimum 7 years' experience after initial NTA certification​​
  • Completion of training can be via in-school training, NTA regional or national workshop/conference, or by our webinars. 
  • Payment of the appropriate NTA Certification fee.
  • Preference for certification as an NTA Tutor/Academic Coach Trainer 
  • Submitted at least one article in the NTA Quarterly Newsletter every other year
  •  Presented a concurrent session during NTA national conference every other year

TUTOR TRAINER CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
  • Current NTA Membership in good standing
  • Bachelor’s Degree Required / Master's Degree Preferred  
  • Submitted at least one article in the NTA Quarterly Newsletter
  • Presented a concurrent session during at least one NTA regional or national conference
  • 150 hours of documented tutoring
  • Competency proven through the following:
    • Successful completion of NTA Tutor Trainer Bundle Training Series
  • Completion of training can be via in-school training, NTA regional or national workshop/conference, or by our webinars. 
  • Payment of the appropriate NTA Certification fee.
  • Completion of Background check and all other required documentation as required.

MASTER TUTOR TRAINER CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
  • Current NTA Membership in good standing
  • Master’s Degree required
  • Minimum of seven years experience after initial NTA certification​
  • Submitted at least 2 articles in the NTA Quarterly Newsletter every other year 
  • Presented a concurrent session during at least one NTA regional or national conference every year
  • ​Successful completion of Tutor Trainer Certification Program
  • ​Conducted at least one Basic, Intermediate, or Advanced Level Tutor Training​​ session, 
    ​or one Basic or Advanced Academic Coach Training Session per year
  • ​Completion of training can be via in-school training, NTA regional or national workshop/conference, or by our webinars. ​
  • Payment of the appropriate NTA Certification fee.
*NEW* CRITICAL THINKING CERTIFICATION 
  • Prerequisite:  Basic Level Tutor Certification
  • Current NTA Membership in good standing
  • AA or AS Degree Required
  • Thirty (30) hours of college credit required
  • 30 hours of documented tutoring
  • Competency proven through the following:
    • Successful completion of Basic Level Tutor Webinar.
    • Successful completion of Learning Preferences Webinar.
    • Successful completion of Critical Thinking Part One
    • Successful completion of Critical Thinking Part Two
    • Completion of training can be via in-school training, NTA regional or national workshop/conference, or by our webinars. 
  • Payment of the appropriate NTA Certification fee.

*NEW* NTA ACT/SAT Tutor Certification
  • Prerequisite: Completion of any of TPAPT Instructor Training Programs (excluding General Tutoring) specific to SAT/ACT
  • Current NTA Membership in good standing
  • AA or AS Degree Required
  • 30 hours of documented ACT or SAT Tutoring
  • Competency proven through the following: 
    • Successful completion of the Basic Tutor Training Webinar
    • Successful completion of the Learning Preferences Training Webinar
    • Successful completion of the NTA Best Practices for Tutoring SAT/ACT Training Webinar
    • Successful completion of the Critical Thinking Part One Training Webinar
  • Payment of the appropriate NTA Certification Fee.
