Dr. Sawyer has served the student affairs profession for nearly four decades in roles that span three states and that have directly impacted hundreds of thousands of students. His career began at the University of North Texas as a Residence Hall Director, where he later served as Coordinator of Intercultural Services, Assistant and Associate Dean of Students, and finally Dean of Students before relocating to southwest Florida where he served as the Founding Chief Student Affairs Officer at the newly chartered Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU). After serving in the capacity as FGCU’s Dean of Students for almost seven years, Sawyer was offered the opportunity to start yet another new state university in California – CSU Channel Islands (CSUCI). Sawyer served as the Founding VPSA and Senior Student Affairs Officer at CSUCI for sixteen years.
Dr. Sawyer currently serves as a Governor appointed Commissioner for the California Student Aid Commission (CSAC), where he was appointed in 2013 and reappointed in 2017. Additionally, Dr. Sawyer serves as faculty for the NASPA African American Male Summit as well as a Board member for Louis Gossett, Jr.’s Eracism Foundation.
On April 2018, Dr. Sawyer assumed the role of Vice President for Student Affairs at Sonoma State University, a member of the California State University System. He earned a Ph.D. from University of North Texas, an M.A. from Eastern New Mexico University, and a B.A. from the University of Mount Union, in Alliance, Ohio.
