Training Topics for Individual Levels

Each Level of Certification requires a minimum number of structured training hours supervised by an NTA certified trainer. Below is a list of recommended training topics for each certification level.

Level I Basic - Face to Face
A minimum of 10 hours of structured tutor training via workshops and conferences with an NTA certified tutor trainer or supervisor.
TRAINING TOPICS TO BE INCLUDED, BUT NOT LIMITED TO:

  • Basic learning theory
  • Definition of tutoring
  • Discussion of tutorial responsibilities and ethics
  • Role modeling and mentoring
  • Setting goals and planning
  • Basic communication skills
  • Good listening practices
  • Campus support systems
  • Basic study skills
  • Critical thinking skills
  • Literacy concerns
  • Tutoring learning disabled students
  • Problem solving skills
  • Diversity issues
  • Learning styles and multiple modalities
  • Tutoring specific subjects areas/skills

Level I Basic, Intermediate and Advanced Modules - Online
Available via the “Tutoring Foundations” program from Crossroads of Learning.

Level II Basic and Level II Advanced
In addition to completion of the “Tutoring Foundations” course, a minimum of 25 hours of structured tutor training via workshops and conferences with an NTA certified tutor trainer or supervisor.

TRAINING TOPICS TO BE INCLUDED, BUT NOT LIMITED TO:

  • Basic Level I and II topics plus:
  • Group dynamics
  • Academic intervention strategies
  • Use of technology
  • Campus and community support systems
  • Instructional Design.
  • Development of instructional materials.
  • Learning styles and multiple modalities.
  • Learners in transition.
  • Non-traditional learners.
  • Advanced cultural awareness.
  • Tutoring specific subjects areas/skills
  • Tutorial for test preparation.
  • Documentation and record keeping.
  • Developing data bases.

Level III Basic  – Professional
In addition to completion of the “Tutoring Foundations” Course, a minimum of 25 hours of structured tutor training via workshops and conferences with an NTA certified tutor trainer or supervisor, plus10 additional hours of individual project work.

TRAINING TOPICS TO BE INCLUDED, BUT NOT LIMITED TO:

  • Review of Basic and Advanced topics.
  • Academic advising and counseling.
  • Tutoring specific populations.
  • Administering and interpreting a Learning Styles Inventory.
  • Group dynamics.
  • Use of diagnostic testing.
  • Prescribing learning activities from diagnostic information.
  • Use of basic counseling techniques.

Level III - Advanced - Professionals

  • All previous level topics plus:
  • Able to organize program resources and personnel.
  • Basic budgetary responsibility.
  • Assist with recruitment and training of staff and volunteers.
  • Instructional Design.
  • Development of instructional materials.
  • Learning styles and multiple modalities.
  • Adult learners.
  • Learners in transition.
  • Non-traditional learners.
  • Advanced cultural awareness.
  • Documentation and record keeping.
  • Developing data bases.
  • Minimal budgetary responsibility.
  • Coordinates programs and resources.
  • Responsible for tutor/student scheduling.
  • Responsible for tutor/student dispute resolution.
  • Actively participates in tutorial research on administrative topics.

Level III - Master (Trainers)

  • All previous topics plus:   
  • Responsible for supervision of all tutor training
  • Planning educational and/or literacy programs.
  • Sits on tutorial, developmental education, or literacy committees within the institution or community.
  • Full budgetary responsibility.
  • Actively seeks outside program funding.
  • Hires and supervises personnel.
  • Actively participates in tutorial research on tutor training and evaluation
