Procedures and Guidelines for Individuals

How do I obtain my initial NTA certification?
There are 4 steps to certification application. A checklist is attached to the Certification Information Form for your assistance.

1. Maintain current NTA membership.
2. Complete the certification information form.
3. Attach required documentation as noted on the application checklist.*
4. Complete background check forms and fees as directed on the certification application*
5. Enclose the appropriate fees (check, money order, or purchase order).

*Individuals participating via a Learning Center Affiliate will have this information submitted for them.

Please remember . . .

1. The certification process will not begin without payment.
2. Certification fees do not include NTA annual membership.
3. Certification and membership cannot be processed concurrently.
4. The NTA does not accept credit cards or department purchase cards.

How do I obtain NTA certification as an Academic Coach?

Individuals seeking certification as Academic Coaches should follow instructions and procedures outlined specifically for this certification. Please note that you must complete Tutor Certification at the Level I -- Advanced as a prerequisite to certification as an Academic Coach.

How do I earn certification as a program director or tutorial administrator?

We recognize that as a tutorial administrator, director, or program coordinator, you may not be a direct tutorial practitioner. As such, applicants for certification as an administrator/director must fulfill the following requirements:

    1. Bachelor's Degree earned.
    2. A minimum of one year experience as an educational program administrator, director or coordinator.
    3. A minimum of 6 months as a tutorial program administrator, director or coordinator.
    4. NTA Member in good standing
    5. In addition to completion of the NTA developed and approved “Tutoring Foundations” course provided by Crossroads of Learning.
    6. 50 hours of structured administrative training via workshops and conferences with an NTA certified tutor trainer or supervisor. 
    7. Supporting documentation as indicated on the certification application and checklist.
