Maintaining Certification

How do I renew my NTA certification? Your NTA certification must be renewed every two years. There are 4 steps to certification renewal.
  1. Maintain current NTA membership.
  2. Complete a renewal application.
  3. Complete the required amount of Continuing Certification Units (CCU's) as required for your level of certification.
  4. Attach required documentation and fees as noted on the application checklist.
How many CCU's do I need? The number of CCU's needed for certification renewal depends on the level of renewal you are seeking.
  1. Level I Basic Certification Renewals require 3 CCU's.
  2. Level I Advanced Certification Renewals require 5 CCU's.
  3. Level II Basic Certification Renewals require 7 CCU's.
  4. Level II Advanced Certification Renewals require 9 CCU’s.
  5. Level III Basic Certification Renewals require 12 CCU's.
  6. Level III Advanced Certification Renewals require 15 CCU's.
  7. Level III Master Certification Renewals require 18 CCU's.
How do I earn CONTINUING CERTIFICATION UNITS? Continuing Certification Units (CCU's) toward certification renewal may be earned in a variety of ways:
  1. Attend the NTA Annual Conference (9 CCU's).
  2. Attend local, regional or national workshops, seminars, and conferences focusing on tutorial assistance, developmental education, or literacy programs (1-3 CCU's).
  3. Successfully complete a web based NTA subject specific seminar (3 CCU's).
  4. Successfully complete a web based NTA tutor training course (6-9 CCU's).
  5. Successfully complete a face-to-face NTA tutor training course (6-9 CCU's).
  6. Present at local, regional or national workshops, seminars and conferences focusing on tutorial assistance, developmental education, or literacy programs (2 CCU's).
  7. Successfully complete a graduate course at an accredited postsecondary institution (3 credit bearing minimum) focusing on tutorial assistance, developmental education, or literacy programs (3 CCU's).
  8. Successfully complete for credit projects and/or directed independent studies at an accredited postsecondary institution focusing on tutorial assistance, developmental education, or literacy programs (3 CCU's).
  9. Document community service or volunteerism for tutorial assistance, developmental education, or literacy programs (up to 5 CCU's).
  10. Publish major articles and/or contribute chapters to research works focusing on tutorial assistance, developmental education, or literacy programs (5 CCU's).
  11. Successfully complete individual tutorial projects and research as conceived by the certification applicant and approved by the NTA Certification Committee (1-15CCU's).
