Math Tutoring Session Techniques

In addition to the 3 Habits of the "SOS" Binder system for Math, there are two techniques tutors can use to help their math students locate the causes of their math confusion and break through to clarity. These techniques are C.R.T (The Confusion Response Technique) and the Isolation Technique.

C.R.T. "The Confusion Response Technique"
C.R.T. which stands for "Confusion Response Technique" is a simple, yet effective tool for tutors to help their students, not only locate the information that is confusing the student in math texts and materials, but also pinpoint the "cause" of the confusion. This is important for two reasons: Firstly, C.R.T. helps students reduce self-doubt and regain confidence and self esteem by making them aware of the factors "causing" their confusion. Secondly, C.R.T. helps the student to locate his own confusion and "self-correct", allowing the student to become a more meta-cognitive and independent thinker and learner.

The Isolation Technique
The Isolation technique is a technique that requires some hands on involvement from the tutor. This technique is especially beneficial for students with math anxiety since, by blocking extraneous information and helping the student to focus on one small part of a math problem at a time, the tutor is able to reduce the student's anxiety and allow him to proceed, logically and methodically. Unlike C.R.T., the Isolation Technique cannot be used in language based subjects, but only for linear, step-by step problems found primarily in math and the sciences.
