NTA's 23rd Professional Development Conference

Picture
Students today face a host of challenges. Whether it's the transition from high school to college, overcoming socio-economic challenges, or engagement with course material, the bridge between student and objective is often broad and bewildering. The NTA's 23rd Professional Development Conference will focus on bridging the gap between the student and the tutor, between the student and the materials, and, ultimately, between the student and success. We hope you join us in April 2018 for this event - the biggest and best NTA conference to date!

Call for Proposals

The Officers, Board of Directors, and Members of the National Tutoring Association invite you to submit proposals for our 23rd Annual Conference. We ask you to join your colleagues in an exchange of ideas and expertise in tutoring. We welcome proposals that expand the discipline in all areas regarding: recruiting, training, and retaining tutors; current trends in practice and research (STEM and STEAM); use of technology; understanding the law; tutoring special populations; online tutoring; grant writing; learning preferences; improving tutorial leadership for directors and coordinators; conflict management; building and marketing private or community  programs; basic nuts and bolts of tutoring; and motivating students.

More information can be found on our conference pages.

The Inimitable José Feliciano to Perform on Conference Opening Night!

The NTA's board of directors is proud to announce that the one and only José Feliciano will entertain NTA members on the opening night of the 23rd Semi-Annual Professional Development Conference! Mr. Feliciano will perform three sets (with a couple surprises). Between sets, Mr. Feliciano will speak about his life. After his performance, he will spend time signing autographs and taking photographs with members.
Picture
Latin pop singer José Feliciano was born in September 1945 in Lares, Puerto Rico. Blind from birth, he and his family moved to New York in the early 1950s, where he began studying accordion, guitar, and voice.

By the early 1960s, Mr. Feliciano was a popular Greenwich Village coffeehouse performer and soon landed a deal with RCA Records, issuing a string of popular Latin influenced folk pop albums sung in both English and Spanish. His best known, most popular singles include a 1968 cover of the Doors’ single Light My Fire, a version of Tommy Tucker’s Hi Heel Sneakers, the theme song to the ’70s TV show Chico and the Man, and the Spanish English Christmas tune Feliz Navidad. He released his most recent record, Senor Bolero II, in 2003.

Constantly touring and recording since the 1960s, Mr. Feliciano remains popular worldwide and has received over 40 gold and platinum albums to date. Mr. Feliciano earned his sixth Grammy Award in 1991 and is the only performer who has won pop music awards in two language categories. Other honors include: The Alma Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2000, Artist of the Millennium Award presented by Premios Globos, and performing at the 75th Annual “Pageant of Peace” Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony in Washington, D.C. with a reception at the White House afterwards.

Mr. Feliciano and his wife, Susan, have been together since 1971 and live in a 270 year old colonial home in Connecticut. In 1988 they were blessed with a daughter, Melissa Anne, and in 1991 with their first son, Jonathan José. In 1995, José and Susan had their third child, Michael Julian. Mr. Feliciano‘s passions include writing and recording in his studio, baseball, and being a dad.

Louis Gossett Jr. to Speak at 2018 Conference!

Picture
His voice is distinct and he commands the screen with quiet authority. As one of the most respected African American actors, Louis Gossett Jr. has established a highly honored career in film, on television, and the stage. A triple threat talent armed with an Emmy for Roots, an Oscar for Officer and a Gentleman, and a Golden Globe for The Josephine Baker Story, Gossett has soared into the upper echelons of Hollywood’s elite actors.

As an impassioned activist, Gossett firmly believes in giving back to the community by empowering all races and cultures. His passion stems from a number of difficult experiences he has faced, including a personal battle with addiction and recovery. As Founder of Eracism Foundation, he focuses on eradicating racism and social ignorance while planting the positive seeds of tolerance and cultural awareness with children. He believes that if we treat our children as our primary commodity in sustaining the future, we will move towards a more unified world.

Charismatic and engaging, Gossett tells the truth on how we can enrich ourselves and teach our children, one generation at a time, how to live a better life stating, “One mentality cannot run the world anymore, we need to communicate with each other without resorting to violence to create peace, care for our planet, and encourage the cooperation between races, religions, and communities.”

Please note that a very limited number of Mr. Gossett's books will available for sale at the conference. We strongly suggest that you order your book prior to the event and bring it with you for Mr. Gossett to personally autograph for you. http://www.eracismfoundation.org/product-category/books/

NTA Certified Tutor Starts Business and Wins Award

High school senior Peter Walter, 18, nearly dropped out of high school due to academic and anxiety issues. Understanding that he needed help, Peter reached out to his school’s administration and found the help that he needed. Further, he trained with the NTA and is now a Certified Intermediate Tutor. Seeing the value that tutoring brings, Peter decided to start a tutoring company named UpperClassman, and he has committed to training and certifying every tutor he works with to a minimum of the NTA Basic Level Tutor. Peter is carefully tracking along to become a NTA Certified Tutor Trainer. UpperClassman was among 36 businesses (out of 600 applications) to be honored in April during the 2017 New Jersey Business Idea Competition Awards Ceremony. Peter was awarded a finalist and was invited to speak about UpperClassman to the audience.
Testimonials on UpperClassman:
~Our experience with UpperClassman has changed the way my son looks at tutoring. Having someone who is similar in age creates an atmosphere that has been very conducive to learning.  My son looks up to his tutor Peter and Has gained confidence from working with an upperclassman rooting him on. I would recommend you give UpperClassman a try.

~Gerry has struggled this year adjusting to middle school. And he said “ mom I think I finally get it. It took me this long!”  He really enjoyed you coming (and said he was glad it wasn’t with an old person!). He was apprehensive because mom telling him what to do stinks. He wasn’t sure what to expect. You really elevated his confidence in himself. And he took your tips very seriously. In a good way. He got a lot out of your session and told me he was happy that you came. His confidence has been an issue this year. Challenging with all of middle school stuff.
You were great with him.  So thank you for that!

"How to Write the Best Job Application of Your Life" Free Webinar

Picture
NTA is excited to announce a free webinar in partnership with award-winning author and speaker Danny Rubin. We highly recommend this webinar for all members of the tutorial, academic coach, and mentor community. Let your tutors and coaches watch individually, or gather everyone around the computer. Either way, do not miss this fantastic webinar.

Danny is an NTA member and expert on business communication skills. In the webinar, he will share important writing strategies you can pass along to students, mentees, and other clients.

Danny’s techniques are used in high schools and colleges across the country and even the Pentagon within writing courses for senior-level military personnel. He’s also a frequent contributor to CNBC.com.

In the webinar, Danny will change your thinking on every major aspect of the job application process. By the end, your students won't look at their resume/cover letter the same way again.

You will learn to:
  • Construct your resume so your skills and experience JUMP off the page
  • Transform your cover letter into a powerful short story of success -- a technique that can grab the employer's attention immediately
  • Craft your LinkedIn profile summary so you make the strongest "introduction" before the employer ever contacts you
  • Prepare for the job interview with strategies that make you unforgettable (most applicants NEVER consider them at all)

The webinar is full of tips to enhance job/internship applications and make your students powerful communicators.

NTA Member Special Feature!

MC SKULE (Rohen Shah) is an educator, NTA member, and certified advanced tutor who raps. “SKULE” is an acronym that stands for “Spreading Knowledge Using Lyrics & Entertainment”. He has helped thousands of students understand math concepts using the power of music, and is currently working on an album called “SKULE’s in Session”, which debuts in 2017. This “Jay Z Parody” song, 99 Math Problems, teaches students that anyone can be good at math if they put their mind (and some pie) to it.

Rohen Shah has been a professional tutor for over a decade. After publishing a calculus study guide in 2008, he made made his debut to the “online teaching” world with an accompanying YouTube video series that received over half a million views. He served as the Head of Math, and later CEO, of Far From Standard Tutoring from 2006 to 2011, prior to starting DiagKNOWstics in 2014. He has taught Game Theory at the University of Michigan, has presented at the National Tutoring Association Professional Development Conference, and has guest lectured at Harvard University.

Rohen pioneered the DiagKNOWstics teacher-training method, described in his upcoming book, DiagKNOWstics: Teaching Like a Physician. He also writes Educational Rap songs as “MC SKULE.” For more information on SKULE, visit their website.

Even more Training in Venezuela!

On February 11th, NTA Certified Tutor Trainer Elena Garcia trained five students as Basic Tutors in Caracas, Venezuela! Then, on April 1st, Elena trained an additional four tutors, making that 24 tutors she has trained since November 2016! The NTA board of directors thinks Elena is amazing. Thank you!

Train and Certify Through the NTA.

The National Tutoring Association is the oldest and largest association dedicated solely to the advancement of tutors. The NTA is the only association in the United States equipped to provide tutor training both face-to-face and through live webinars. We also offer training at our professional development conferences held every two years in Tampa, FL, as well as at regional events. NTA trained and certified tutors take away a certification that is something of their own, a certificate that holds real meaning for them and future employers. The NTA trains and certifies more tutors and trainers than any other association. Experience the difference. Train and certify through the NTA!
Our Mission is to foster the advancement of professional and peer tutoring and academic coaching, support research into best practices and standards for all tutors, support tutor training, advocate for tutor certification, and uphold the NTA Code of Ethics. As such we are not a private tutorial agency and we do not accept students for tutorial study. The NTA is not a sanctioning or arbitration agency.

We welcome you to join our growing membership of peer, paraprofessional, professional, volunteer, and private practice tutors, trainers and academic coaches.

NTA Certification is designed to be earned at the individual or program level. Members represent colleges, universities, high schools, middle schools, elementary schools, school districts, literacy programs, community programs, faith-based programs, grant supported programs, and NCLB/SES providers.

Tutor Strategy of the Week

Picture
This icon that you see in the upper righthand corner of our home page is a link to an important NTA resource. We continuously ask our tutors, tutor trainers, academic coaches, and board members to share their most successful strategies in tutoring. Some may be tried and true strategies, and utilized since the days of Socrates. Other strategies may have evolved over time, especially with our ever-changing world of technology and communication. Still, other strategies may just be what one tutor did in order to make that connection with his or her tutee. You don't need to be a member of the NTA to enjoy these strategies; they are there for all tutors to utilize. Our strategy of the week is updated, usually, on Wednesday morning. That's a great time to drop on by the NTA website and check out what's going on, get a fresh tutoring strategy, and perhaps even take a webinar course. A recent strategy of the week - below - was sent in by NTA Board Member Stephanie Dunaiff, who also presents a wonderful webinar on Private Practitioner Certification. We hope you enjoy her strategy. Find more at our Past Tutor Strategies page.

Connections, Connections, Connections: Make sure that you are able to connect the content to the student’s life.
Inform the student of when and why he or she will use the content.

Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics Nominee and Fulbright-Hays Groups Abroad Project Grant Awardee!

Picture
Ishmael Brown, Jr., the NTA's President-Elect and National Training Director, has been nominated for a Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) is the highest recognition that a kindergarten through 12th-grade mathematics or science (including computer science) teacher may receive for outstanding teaching in the United States. Up to 108 teachers are recognized each year.

Presidential Awardees receive a certificate signed by the President of the United States, a trip to Washington D.C. to attend a series of recognition events and professional development opportunities, and a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation.

Awardees also join an active network of outstanding educators from throughout the nation. Since 1983, more than 4,700 teachers have been recognized for their contributions in the classroom and to their profession. Awardees serve as models for their colleagues, inspiration to their communities, and leaders in the improvement of mathematics and science education.

Mr. Brown has also been accepted as a participant for the Fulbright-Hays Groups Abroad Project. The Fulbright-Hay Groups Abroad Project will take place in Cameroon, Africa. This program provides grants to support overseas projects in training, research, and curriculum development in modern foreign languages and area studies for teachers, students, and faculty engaged in a common endeavor. Projects may include short-term seminars, curriculum development, group research or study, or advanced intensive language programs.

In addition to the important role Ishmael plays here at the NTA, he also teaches math at Spring Valley High School in Columbia, SC, and is the owner of InfiNeXt Educational Services. Congratulations Ishmael!

The NTA's Commitment and Pledge to Community Service

Recently, while attending a conference in Baltimore, our own Dr. Lucy Lapekas and Brandy Daingerfield participated in a Community Service Project. They and many other business leaders packed over 1,000 bags with toiletry items to give out to Baltimore's homeless veterans.

The National Tutoring Association prides itself on giving back to the community, but we need your help, too. We have committed to sending care packages to our trrops in the Middle East. We have two more packages going out soon! Please help us by donating (see our needed items list below in the One Voice Campaign post or you can send money, too, and we'll buy the items in your name).

The NTA's "One Voice" Campaign Continually Needs Your Help!

The NTA added a new initiative to our challenges for 2015 through 2017. We have been preparing care packages for nominated active duty US airmen stationed in the Middle East and so far we have sent over 100 packages! But our donation bins are close to becoming bare! We encourage your tutors, coaches, and staff to make a donation to our military campaign so we can restock with needed items for sending care packages to our airmen for the holidays. We particularly need:

Disposable razors for men, Chapstick, bar soap, toothpaste, body powder, mens' socks, Listerine strips, toothbrushes, floss picks, and stick deodorant. Please do not send chocolate or small bags of chips or crackers as they tend to get smashed in shipping. Notes of thanks and holiday wishes are encouraged.

These brave airmen like anything that reminds them of home, or things they cannot get from their base exchange (a trailer that sells basic supplies). Examples include:  Beef jerky, snacks, peanuts/almonds/pistachios, t-shirts, toiletries, games, journals, calling cards, black gloves, coffee, cd's, TV show DVDs, iTunes cards, travel mugs, small fans, sunscreen, towels, twin size sheet sets, twin size bed-in-a-bag, pillows, black back-packs, colored leaves from trees, pens, stationary, lotion, air freshener, brushes, combs, hair-cutting scissors, chap stick, white socks, small alarm clocks, hot sauce, feminine hygiene products, hand sanitizer, baby powder, small cheap DVD players, inexpensive CD players, sunglasses, water guns, flavor packets from fast food restaurants (i.e. Taco Bell hot sauce, Arby’s sauce, etc.), birthday or holiday decorations, cards and letters, and/or magazines/books.

* Please - no pornography or alcoholic beverages.

So, start collecting and send your donations to:

The National Tutoring Association (One Voice)
PO Box 6840
Lakeland,  FL 33807
(or send an email to us for a street address)

The NTA will create the care packages and send them to the airmen. Thank you for all you do for our communities! Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions. Remember that your one voice can make all the difference.

Picture
"Thank you for selecting me for your "One Voice" campaign. While I have a strong support system back home it is always nice to get some special goodies! I thank you for everything that you do to support the military and their families. Not everyone has the support of friends/love ones to send them things. Packages like these maybe some of the only ones they receive during their time away. Thank you for all you do!"

Even More New Webinars!

Picture
The NTA is proud to announce that we have partnered with communications expert, Danny Rubin. Danny is an author and speaker trusted by students and working professionals for his practical advice on writing, networking and interpersonal skills.

Danny is the author of Wait, How Do I Write This Email?, a collection of 100+ templates for networking, the job search, and LinkedIn. The book is used in settings like high schools, colleges, workforce development programs, and even the Pentagon where educators work with active-duty military and civilian contractors. He also leads interactive communications workshops and webinars for corporate and college/workforce development audiences. Every session gives people practical skills they can apply right away.

Visit Danny Rubin's website to see him in action during a workshop. You can also follow him on Twitter at @DannyHRubin.

Danny will be recording the following two webinars exclusively for the NTA. Look for the first webinar, How to Write in the Business World Like a Total Pro, to be available late September, and the following webinar, How to be a Great Storyteller (and Share Your Success with the World), to be available in early October. Additional information can be found on our Recorded Webinars page.

How to Write in the Business World Like a Total Pro webinar:

It’s a fact. People with strong writing skills network better, land more job offers, and develop faster in their careers. Join author and communications expert Danny Rubin for an engaging, practical webinar on how to write with poise and leave the reader wanting more. Danny will walk you step-by-step through the fundamentals of strong writing and then show you how to apply those lessons in networking and the job search.

As Danny says, “Write well. Open doors.” After the webinar, you’ll see what he means!
---------------------
How to be a Great Storyteller (and Share Your Success with the World)

You can tell people about your success or you can show them. A dynamic, colorful story will entertain the audience and prove how hard you work each day for your students. Danny Rubin, an author and communications expert, will guide you through several key storytelling opportunities:
  • Cover letters
  • Grant applications/annual reports
  • Blog posts
  • Letters of recommendation
After the webinar, you will understand the power of storytelling and how to tell stories people never forget.

New Recorded Closed-Captioned Webinars Available!

The National Tutoring Association is proud to announce several projects that have been brought to fruition over the summer that will assist in training our tutors and academic coaches toward certification, thereby assisting these teams to better serve their student populations.

We are excited to announce that our webinar training team, led by our Communications Director, Pete Conrad, has achieved our goal of finding an efficient and cost effective way of closed-captioning our eight main tutor and academic coach training webinars. Once again, the NTA has taken the lead in providing a service that no other association provides. The first webinars with closed-captioning are our newly-revised Basic Academic and Advanced Coaching sessions facilitated by our own National Training Director, Ishmael Brown.

Closed captions, or subtitles, are not only for the hearing impaired. Viewers with ESL benefit by being able to follow along with the closed captioned speech. Closed captioning can also help to maintain concentration and focus on the material, which translates into higher engagement. Finally, closed captions are great for those sound-intensive and -sensitive offices and libraries. Soon, all of the NTA's webinars will be offered with closed captioning!

Ordering NTA Training Series Workbooks.

Certified NTA Trainers may order NTA Training Series Workbooks. The workbooks are intended to be consumable, used by one tutor or  academic coach. The materials are copyright protected and may not be copied or used by more than one trainee. Workbooks must be prepaid before shipping. Once payment is  received, workbooks usually ship  within 5 days via USPS 2nd day. All workbook orders will be invoiced via e-mail through PayPal. The NTA no longer accepts purchase orders. NTA Certified Trainers will receive a free training PowerPoint with a minimum purchase of 25 workbooks. To order workbooks, please contact Dr. Lucy Lapekas at ntatutor@aol.com.
